State President's Project for 2010-11
Food Drives for our Communities

President's theme

"My president’s challenge this coming year will be to continue with being involved in the effort to eliminate hunger in our communities. I have challenged all Kansas ESA members to continue working to eliminate hunger in their own communities in 2010-2011. The opportunities are endless: volunteer at a food pantry, donate to school lunches and snacks, or provide nutritional meals to shut-ins.

In addition to this challenge I have encouraged them to make Birthday Bags for their food pantries. These birthday bags consist of a cake mix, tub of frosting, box of candles and a generic birthday card. They can then be given to families who would not otherwise be able to celebrate a child’s birthday or even an aging parent. Who doesn’t like a little cake on their birthday?

"Food pantries are empty, children are not able to pay for school lunches, and the unemployed are scrambling just to make ends meet. Hunger touches every community large and small, urban and rural. Special recognition will be given at convention next year to chapters and districts who participate in this hunger challenge.

The form to report your activities for the President's challenge this year will be available soon." FEED THE HUNGRY FORM

SherryNote from Sherry Marlow: The Kansas Food Bank had a project going that would really go along with Pat Josey’s Presidents challenge "To Feed the Hungry.” Pat liked the idea and I told her I would take care of getting the information out to the chapters.

Here was the deal: They had an organization that would quadruple donations that were made up to $30,000. When we called on Friday, the match had been met already but they still desperately need our donations. There are so many out of work and need our support. Donations do have to be sent to the Wichita location as it is the main facility for distributions of funds to the participating 220 counties in Kansas. Of course you can always donate staple food items to your local food bank. We are doing this as a Chapter & District project.

Another way we can participate is in “Showyourhelpinghand.com.” It is a project with the singer, Beyonce’ and Hamburger Helper. There are 3 ways to participate in this program that runs until December 31, 2010 or until they reach up to 700,000 more meals to the Food Banks. You can log onto Showyourhelpinghand.com and find out all the information. You can enter your code off the inside of specially marked boxes of Hamburger Helper. This will donate 18 cents for each code entered.

If you don’t have Internet access, get your code numbers to one of your members and I’m sure they will be happy to do it for you or call me and I will. Another advantage to this program is “The Box Tops for Education” are on the boxes of Hamburger Helper that can be donated to Heartspring or your child’s school. The following fliers are about both projects.

Email me or call when you get home if you have more questions about the projects. Sherry Marlow
