In Our Memories
Thou Art My Sister; I love You
Thou are my sister because we were born of the same Great Spirit, conceived from the same mound of earth. We slept quietly together in the cradle of unknowing until He in His gentleness set us in the midst of humanity. You are my sister; I love you. You and I are destined to be companions on the highway of life. Together or apart you are my sister; I love you. If the color of my skin is different from yours, it matters not, only let the beauty of our souls be kindred. I will honor your wisdom and understanding, as you will mine. Together we shall seek the seeds of truth in the distant rooms of the Great Spirit; the reflection of inner knowledge shall wear as beauty upon our faces. You are my sister; I love you. I will be human and fall down in rough places, but thy hand is near mine. I will reach for it, I shall not be alone. I will embrace you when the reins of sorrow visit you. I will befriend your soul as if it were my own. You are my sister; I love you. If death takes from the lamp of life and the veil of eternal sleep falls across my eyes before yours I will wait for you. I will come to lead you across the bridge of night into the meadows of the Great Spirit. You are my sister; I love you. |

Dorothy Kennedy - Birthdate Unknown - February 3, 2011
Dorothy Kennedy passed away February 3, 2011. Dorothy went to a one–room school house. When Dorothy was a freshman her parents moved into Madison where Dorothy attended Madison High School, graduating in 1931. She went to Stickler Business College in Topeka for almost a year, but she learned that she was not interested in being confined to an office and she needed to be around people. She accepted a job in Lyons, Kansas in her cousin’s small thriving department store. It was here in Lyons that Dorothy was invited to join ESA in 1945. It was also here in Lyons where Dorothy met Charles Kennedy, when he returned from serving in World War II. Charlie came to the toggery for civilian clothes. He was being measured for a tailor made suit, brought over a sample color to get Dorothy’s opinion if it was a pretty color. She had no idea he was buying the suit to wear to their wedding. On April 6, 1947 in Lyons they were united in marriage. To this union was born one son, Charles Craig. Dorothy had been a resident of Manhattan since 1967. She was a member of the First Christian Church and served as a deacon. She enjoyed being involved with her circle group making blankets, and lap covers for those in need. Dorothy was a member of Gamma Lambda chapter of ESA and served with great joy and love. She loved time spent with her sorority sisters making tray favors for the hospital, lap covers for those in care and rehab homes. She loved to bake her special angel food cake and share it with many neighbors and friends. Dorothy was always about doing acts of kindness. When Dorothy and Charlie moved to Meadowlark Hills Retirement Center, she continued to serve others. She would make “house calls” to see if everything was okay with her neighbors. She would take the flowers that were left from various occasions and put them in special vases and take to someone ill or having a bad day. Dorothy brought joy and happiness to everyone around her. In Dorothy’s own words, “ESA is very special to me, thanks to each of you for your lasting friendships and bear hugs.”

Mildred Baer (1914-1988)
Mildred was born November 29, 1914, in Bazine, Kansas, at the family home, the oldest of nine children born to Emil and Mabel Mauth, and passed away following a short illness at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas, on August 8, 1988, at the age of 73 years. Being a charter member of Delta Omicron chapter of ESA, she served as President, Zone 10 Chairman, and State Corresponding Secretary. Mildred’s concern for other and for her community kept her involved in many volunteer activities. She always said, “Yes”, never “No”, and strived to do the best possible job. She was never too busy to help whenever there was a need. Milton and Mildred have one daughter, Stephanie and their son-in-law, Alex. Their grandchildren, Stephen, Alexis and Tiffany each brought her their own special joy and sendoff pride. Keeping the children from babyhood through Kindergarten, while Stephanie taught school, gave them a chance to develop a closeness enjoyed by few grandmothers. Being constantly busy brought Mildred much satisfaction. Volunteer work, bridge, travel, cooking (farm-style), daily care of grandchildren, farm bookwork, driving tractor, and distributing her time and own special brand of caring though9ut the county was her joy in life. ESA sister, Molly Marie Antenin writes, “The sisters of Delta Omicron chapter, Ness City, will miss Mildred so much. She kept us all “up-to-date” with all information of years past at her finger tips. We needed only to ask the question. Here community involvements radiated what a true ESA member and friend she was. Others came first.”

She will be sadly missed by her sisters in Delta Pi, as well as the many friends she made throughout the state. Margaret Morrison – Iota Kappa – 1964
Members of Iota Kappa chapter and many of the sorority members here in Zone 5 were shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Margaret Morrison, of a heart attack on September 8, -1964. She was working at the First Methodist Church that morning, which work she had been doing since her retirement, when she quietly fell across her typewriter and was gone. Margaret joined Iota Kappa in 1942, received her 20-year service award in 1962. She served in all the elective offices of the chapter and always had special work in the chapter; was the first zone chairman in Zone 5, appointed by the state president, and served until the Wichita City Council was organized. While president of Iota Kappa, she |
(MORISON continued) organized our sister chapter Gamma Theta. In 1949 she organized our sister chapter Delta Theta and served as their sponsor until the chapter disbanded in 1959. She found chapter homes for these members with
other chapters. Margaret leaves no family, no relatives, only her sorority sisters and friends where she worked. Until her retirement she held the record of being the employee with the greatest length of service in the United States with the Farm Credit Administration. She retired, in 1963 with45 years of service. A special dinner was given in her honor upon her retirement, and Governor Too tell of the Washington office presented her with a diamond wristwatch. All chapter and sorority rituals took on special meaning when she conducted the services-and because of this she was asked many times to be in charge of the pledge and jewel pin ceremonies, not only in her own Iota Kappa, but other chapters in Wichita. She was dependable; the word "excuse" was not in her vocabulary; nothing took preference over her sorority or her desire to serve in any way she could. She will be missed by all her chapter sisters and many other sorority sisters that knew her; she will especially be missed by those sisters whose privilege it was to be sponsored by Margaret and to first learn about the friendship and fellowship of Epsilon Sigma Alpha. On September 8, 1964, twenty-two years of "the right to be of service" was brought to a close with the death of our sister Margaret Morrison. |
