Why it pays to belong to ESA!

Picture
Epsilon Sigma Alpha, what is that? I had never heard of this outstanding service organization until July of 2011. I was first introduced to ESA through a dear friend Audrey Eoff, from Texas, who has been a member for a number of years. She and I had formerly worked together through our Newspaper in Education (NIE) programs and had attended several NIE conferences together. Since she was coming to the Kansas ESA convention, she invited me and another former NIE director from Sedalia, MO to join her for lunch. We met at the convention center and I was immediately intrigued by this enthusiastic group of ladies.

My first impression was of groups of women, milling around, looking at exhibits and seeming to be very excited about this event. I asked Audrey what this was and she immediately steered me towards the Kansas welcome booth, where I was introduced to several of the Zeta Epsilon, Overland Park chapter members. I asked them how I could join, as I had always been interested in joining a women’s sorority. I was in the process of moving from Missouri to Kansas and we exchanged contact information so I could be contacted after our move.

Judy Christiansen was instrumental in keeping in contact and in October, 2011 I attended my first ESA meeting. I was again impressed with the warm welcome and friendliness of these new acquaintances and I knew I wanted to join this organization; still not sure of what it was all about.

Since then I’ve gone through the ceremonies and training and am now a full member of this outstanding service organization. At the Kansas State convention in May, 2012, the incoming president asked the various nominees to answer one simple question. “What does ESA mean to me?”

I have given that some thought and this is my unsolicited response. To me ESA means ... Each of Us — Some of Us — All of US
Each of us: is unique and has something special to contribute.
Some of us: carry more responsibility and leadership, while others give support and assistance.
All of us: are needed to carry out the mission of ESA — to care for ourselves; for others in need; and for one another.
I’m thankful for Audrey’s introduction to ESA and for my chapter and Kansas sisters for their warm welcome and continued support. So what is ESA? Come sit down with me and I’ll tell you all about it.
Diane Goold - Zeta Epsilon
