How to earn points for the
PALLAS ATHENE AWARDS PROGRAM
Pledge Lesson Number 5

Picture
The awards program for ESA has several different components. We’ll talk about the Pallas Athene Awards in Lesson 5. Look on page 13 of “The Ideals of ESA” booklet under Member Achievement Programs.

As a pledge, you work on The FIRST PEARL award. If successfully earning 1000 points within your first year in ESA, you will begin earning points toward your First Degree Pallas Athene. Starting over at zero after you achieve the first 1000 points (within the first year) - - - unless you did not receive your FIRST PEARL – then the points may be counted toward your First Degree. These have to be recalculated according to the Pallas Athene point system. In other words if you earned your First Pearl those 1000 points may not be counted toward your First Degree. No one but a pledge can earn the FIRST PEARL.

Once more let me remind you that the member chooses whether or not they wish to participate in the awards programs. It is a way that we reward active chapter participation.

The Pallas Athene program is based upon an accumulation of points to acquire the highest 6th degree. You need to find out from your Chapter president how they operate the Pallas Athene program within the chapter. Points to consider:
  • Each chapter will tabulate these points in their own way.
  • Some chapters actively work toward these goals – and some will let their members choose if they want to work toward the degrees.
  • Some chapters keep track of each member’s points and submit the proper forms for the member when they reach their degrees.
  • Some chapters let their members keep track of their own points. Each member is responsible for submitting their own forms to apply for the degrees.

2. How many points do you have to accumulate to get the First Degree?
3. What does the Second Degree “Arete” stand for?
4. How many points do you have to accumulate to get the Second Degree?
5. What does the Third Degree “Sophia” stand for?
6. How many points do you have to accumulate to get the Third Degree?
7. What does the Fourth Degree “Sophrosyne” stand for?
8. How many points do you have to accumulate to get the Fourth Degree?
9. What does the Fifth Degree “Tharos” stand for?

11. What does the Sixth Degree “Ethos” stand for?
12. How do you achieve the Sixth Degree?

The Chart below is how you achieve points for the Pallas Athene Awards Program. There is available for purchase from ESA Merchandise a booklet called “Pallas Athene – First Pearl/Pallas Athene booklet – A personal Record” to keep track of your Pallas Athene points. Otherwise just keep tabulation on your own so you don’t lose track as these points are cumulative.

  • 1st Degree Pallas Athene = 1,500 points
  • 2nd Degree Pallas Athene = 3,000 points
  • 3rd Degree Pallas Athene = 5,000 points
  • 4th Degree Pallas Athene = 10,000 points
  • 5th Degree Pallas Athene = 35,000 points
  • 6th Degree Pallas Athene = Presentations in education, service & association
